Hello everyone, my name is Mikal Jonas and I'm here to present my Pecha Kucha, in which I'll show my progression so far through Unit 13. I will be making a game for my FMP and hopefully, by the end, you will understand whats it's all about and how I came about it.
Slide 2
The brief of the Unit is highly vast, allowing us to create whatever project we want and explore any theme or subject that we wish to. I chose the Game pathway as it's my current passion and I'm becoming much more skilled with it. After a while, I eventually chose to explore the idea of an ecosystem within a game.
Slide 3
At first, I was feeling a mixed bag of emotions. Not having any limitations is positive but at the same time, it sparked multiple different thoughts and ideas I couldn't ground. To aid my thought process, I analysed 3 different games, Ico, Shadow of The Colossus and Ecco the dolphin. All of these assisted with me defining my theme, especially Ecco The Dolphins as it was the main one that sparked my first thoughts. This created a good starting point for the Unit.
Slide 4
My first concept of what the game would be is playing as a fish in a fish tank. It would interact with the other fish and objects within the tank and everything would be interconnected. However, I wasn't able to muster up a narrative at this point and I believed being only in a fish tank could be very restrictive. Thus I go on to think of a more vast kind of concepts.
Slide 5
The second concept I had was a lot more abstract. I thought of setting it within space, where you play as a Mythological/alien creature who has to find its way back to its planet after being separated from it. The character would meet different creatures along the way. While I love this idea, I want to make sure my concept is grounded and not something I may get too into and affect it being a complete outcome.
Slide 6
My final concept is more of a mix of the two. This idea was to be set in a large body of water where you play as a sea-like a creature and explore the vast world in a free roam fashion, interacting with all the creatures there and learn about the hidden lore hidden behind. This mixes the first concept of connecting life together and the second of being more vast a wide.
Slide 7
I managed to determine what my audience would be for my current idea of my project. Looking at the BBFC and PEGI specifications, I saw that the ratings PEGI 7 and PG fitted and thus the age range would be from 7 and over. I also Identified the types of players that would be attracted to my game, which are Exploration, Persevere, Hermit, Mechanics and Context.
Slide 8
I've contextually analysed different pieces of work that link with my theme to help me see how I can boot the effectiveness of my theme in how I can portray it. My first CA was a game called Kolibri, I watched a playthrough of it and it helped to show how an ecosystem can be embedded within a no realistic narrative but still be effective, seeing how it has the main protagonist go from eating with his species to shooting down bugs.
Slide 9
The second CA that I conducted was on a Sealife Documentary on the Wild Nature TV youtube channel. It explored the life of the creatures in two different seas, showing how they live together, interact and how the environment has an impact on them. This got me to start thinking of how I can build the creatures in my game as a community, as this would further intensify how its all one big ecosystem. My ideas for the environment also was boosted, giving ideas such has to have hazardous one and others that affect the fish, depending on their physiology.
Slide 10
Then I eventually got to artistic research. First, I analysed 2 different art books that were based on fantasy. They showed how effective it can be to use both the environment along with the subjects within it in conjunction to present different portrayals, such as if something belongs to fits within the location. It's an effective way to give off messages without the need for a narrative. This allowed me to think deeper and go beyond the face value of things.
Slide 11
Avatar the Last Airbender is a western TV cartoon, released on 21 February 2005. In the show, all the animals are a combination of 2 different animals like the examples on this slide. This is an interesting concept as it makes them retain realistic traits as they still consist of features from real-world animals but also makes them more abstract and imaginative as you ultimately have a new creature at the end of it. This is something I possibly my embed in my game, as it would be a good way to make unique designs but still take from real life.
Slide 12
As a form of Production Research, I managed to get a visit to King studio, the game company who have made games like candy crush. He gave me insightful advice to assist with my production, such as how when writing out plans, its best to sort it out weekly instead of daily as it makes it less prone to become discouraging to update and follow. Seeing how they all collaborated, I saw how important it can be to learn from your peers, as some of them learn most of what they know by asking others.
Slide 13
Throughout the project, I will use multiple applications, such as, Photoshop For Designs, Title Screen, Game Assets and Cover Poster, Adobe Audition For Work With Audio, Two Possible Ones Are Blender, If I Decide To Have Use 3D Models As A Design Choice For Characters/Assets, May Use Animate Or Krita For Animation, More Practice with Animate and most prominently, Unity, as it Is The Game Engine I'm Using
Slide 14
Currently, I have different skills that will definitely assist me through this project. I'm Very Proficient With most of The Adobe Suite apps, I'm practised with using a graphics tablet which will be helpful when designing the visual assets and my skills with the coding language C# is becoming more and more proficient which is what I'll have to use to construct my game.
Slide 15
The skills I wish to improve are my skill In Pyxel Art, as after seeing and analysis may different media that uses the art, I've become increasingly fascinated by it, and I will possibly use it for when I'm design backgrounds. In terms of my C# skills, I've become proficient but I hope to become good at it to the point where I'm able to write scripts off by heart without always relying on my past scripting to remind me. This would allow me to boot my pace with my production and allow me to do more with the project itself.
Slide 16
For a form of experimentation, I made a test script for the movement controls of my player. I managed to create a working 8 direction controls in which I have control over the speed and velocity. This acts as a good base which will develop as I start making animations and environments for the player.
Slide 17
My overall aim of this whole Unity is to develop my skills like I said before like Coding, Character Animation, Worldbuilding In Games, Storytelling, Using Unity, Pyxel Art And How I Handel The Production Process. I intend to produce a complete outcome, one I can present to any Unis or colleges that I go to. My target grade is a Distinction that I'm confident I can achieve if I continue putting in the work I am now.
Slide 18
From this point, I first plan on doing some primary research on my audience, trying to further determine how my game can further cater to them. I plan to do this by conducting player acting, where I play games I wouldn't normally to get a feel for why people admire them. Then I will begin ore-production, were Ill begin concept art and detailed planning for the rest of production.
Slide 19
I will be using Blogger To Document My Entire Process, Experience And Actions Throughout The Whole Unity, Especial On The Reflective Journal Which Will Intel Everything With Detail And Thorough Reflection Of My Thoughts And Feelings Throughout.
